Deutsche Reichsbahn (German State Railways). A crucial role in carrying out the "Final Solution" was played by the German railway system. In 1942 the Reichsbahn, a large administrative department under the German Ministry of Transportation, employed half a million clerks and 900,000 other staff and serviced both the military and the civilian population. From October 1941 to October 1944 the Reichsbahn transported millions of Jews to concentration camps and murder sites. Reichsbahn officials collaborated with various offices and mainly with section IVB4 of the RSHA headed by Adolf Eichmann. In accordance with the requests of the agencies of deportation, the Reichsbahn supplied the necessary trains and personnel and scheduled the time tables and routes of the deportation trains. The German rail company collected a fee for every Jew it transported.
