The International Institute for Holocaust Research

The mass murder of the 2,284,000 Jews living in the General Government of occupied Poland began in March 1942. Several months later, this large scale murder operation was given the code name Operation Reinhard, in memory of Reinhard Heydrich, head of the RSHA (Reich Security Main Office) and the main organizer of the “Final Solution” in Europe, who was assassinated by Czech resistance fighters in May 1942.
