The International Institute for Holocaust Research

In the spring and summer of 1943, Nazi Germany sustained a series of losses on its various military fronts: Its forces in northern Africa surrendered in May, Operation Citadel (the Battle of Kursk) ended in July with the Germans' defeat and the onset of the Soviet counteroffensive on the eastern front. In the same month, the Allies landed in Sicily and Benito Mussolini of Fascist Italy, Germany’s ally, was unseated. Amid all this, the Allies’ aerial bombardments of the German rear and industrial centers intensified. Despite the worsening of their situation, the German authorities continued to deport Jews from all over Europe to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Theresienstadt ghetto, and the Aktion Reinhard camps, which were still operative.
