The International Institute for Holocaust Research

The construction of a camp at Birkenau, located 3 km. from the Auschwitz concentration camp (Auschwitz I), began in March 1941. In September 1941, Soviet prisoners of war were gassed in a bunker at Auschwitz I. The first gas chamber at Birkenau was activated in the spring of 1942.
